Guadalupe Marino Garcia Selected By Joyce Ivy Alumnae

ANN ARBOR, MI, April 15, 2021 – The Joyce Ivy Foundation recently announced the names of eighty-two young women receiving 2021 summer scholarships for pre-college study at highly selective colleges and universities. From the group of 2021 Joyce Ivy Foundation Summer Scholars, Guadalupe (Lupe) Marino Garcia, a junior at South High School in Fargo, North Dakota, has been selected to receive the 2021 Alumnae Scholarship.

Since 2013, the Joyce Ivy Foundation has designated a Scholar in the incoming cohort as an Alumnae Scholarship recipient. This student is selected directly by Joyce Ivy alumnae, and her scholarship is supported by gifts made by the alumnae community throughout the year, including during the annual Pay-it-Forward Campaign. To date, the Joyce Ivy Foundation has named 972 Summer Scholars, including eighty-two members of the 2021 cohort.

“The highlight of my year was definitely working with the wonderful group of Joyce Ivy Fellows on our fundraising campaign,” said Young Seo Lee, JIF ‘19 and Senior Fellow for Alumnae Giving. “Collaborating with the Fellows to make our plans come to life constantly inspires me, and I am so proud of all we have been able to accomplish. Through the Joyce Ivy Foundation, I have found a tight-knit community that supports and empowers all women alike, one that I am eternally grateful for. As someone who was able to participate in a life-changing educational academic experience thanks to the Foundation, I treasure any way to ensure that the next generation of Scholars have this opportunity as well. I look forward to seeing how the Foundation will impact these future Scholars to challenge themselves to pursue their goals and see all that they are capable of.”

Lupe Marino Garcia has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Alumnae Scholarship. Lupe is passionate about the arts and participates in both orchestra and chamber orchestra. She has a dream to bring her experience with music to younger students from disadvantaged backgrounds. At the start of the pandemic, Lupe and her friends made over 400 masks that were donated to her school district. In addition to her exemplary academic achievement, Lupe has amassed 230 volunteer hours and is recognized as a leader in her school and community.

“In addition to her incredibly impressive academic achievements, Lupe has a heart of service that really stood out to our Scholar Selection Committee,” said Allison Jegla, JIF ‘10 and Senior Vice President of the Joyce Ivy Foundation. “She has made a mark on her community, and we are thrilled to welcome her into ours. We hope that she will connect with like-minded individuals in the Joyce Ivy Foundation and be inspired to continue to chase her dreams.”

“As a first-generation young woman of color, I have had the dream of going to college outside of the barren fields of North Dakota, and with the help of the Joyce Ivy Foundation, I know I will be able to accomplish this dream,” said Lupe Marino Garcia. “I am extremely thankful and honored to be selected as the 2021 Alumnae Scholarship recipient. I promise that I will take advantage of all the opportunities within, to create a ripple effect in my community and help others along the way as well. I cannot express the words of excitement and gratitude I feel towards the Joyce Ivy Foundation.”

The 2021 Summer Scholars will be honored during a virtual Gala on May 13, live streamed from Detroit, Michigan. The Gala will feature an address by the 2021 Joyce Ivy Foundation Leader of the Year, Rosalind Brewer, CEO of Walgreens. The Foundation will also honor three Women of Impact award recipients: Sarah Politis, JIF ‘08; Megan Red Shirt-Shaw; and Camille Stewart.
