Joyce Ivy Announces Four Board Elections
The Joyce Ivy Foundation today announced the election of three members to its Board of Directors and one member to its Associate Board of Directors. Anisha Gupta of San Francisco, California, Katharine Janes (JIF ‘12) of Washington, District of Columbia and Heather Madland of Ann Arbor, Michigan were elected Directors. Via Carpenter (JIF ‘16) of New York, New York was elected to the Associate Board.
“I am thrilled that such talented women are eager to devote their time and energy to developing women’s leadership in the Midwest with Joyce Ivy,” said Valerie Brader, who chairs the Board of Directors. “I am especially excited that two of them are Summer Scholar alumnae who are already benefiting others with the leadership potential we saw when they were in high school. A Joyce Ivy Woman of Impact award winner in 2024, Anisha Gupta is a technology entrepreneur and business leader with a decade of experience building and scaling mission-driven companies. Most recently, she co-founded and led Bluebird Climate, a climate-tech software platform that helped consumer brands measure and reduce their environmental impact, leading to its successful acquisition in 2023. Prior to founding Bluebird, Anisha held leadership roles at various startups and began her career in Unilever’s prestigious Future Leaders Program. As a chemical engineer by training who has successfully navigated both technical and business leadership roles, she is passionate about mentoring young women in STEM and creating more inclusive pathways to leadership. Anisha holds a BSE in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan and an MS in Sustainability Management from Columbia University.
Katharine Janes (JIF ‘12) is an attorney and public servant currently working as a law clerk for United States Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. Katharine is passionate about criminal and juvenile justice reform and has worked with organizations including the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, the New Hampshire Public Defender, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. As a Director, Katharine extends an already deep history of dedicated service to Joyce Ivy. She was named an Associate Board Member and Co-Chair of the Summer Scholars Selection Committee in 2020 after previously leading as a Senior Fellow, Michigan Geographic Circle Leader, and College Admissions Symposium Planning Committee Member. Katharine holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame, as well as a JD and MA in History from the University of Virginia.
Heather Madland is a leader with 25 years of debt and equity experience in middle market M&A across multiple functional areas including deal execution, portfolio management, business development, investor relations, marketing, and communications. She is currently Managing Director, Head of Business Development for Novacap, a leading North American private equity firm with more than $10B in assets under management. Heather previously spent over a decade at Huron Capital, a Detroit-based middle market private equity firm, and she has also held roles at SPP Capital Partners, Comerica Bank, CIT Sponsor Finance, and Apogem Capital (fka Madison Capital Funding). She is currently an independent trustee for the Detroit Police and Fire Retirement System Investment Committee, a board member for the Detroit Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG), and a member of Trustee Council at Cornell University. Heather holds a BA from Cornell in French with a concentration in International Relations.
Via Carpenter (JIF ‘16) joins the Associate Board with experience as a small business owner and a nonprofit consultant with a commitment to social justice and youth development. She is the founder and owner of Via’s Cookies, a business she created in college that makes allergy-inclusive sweets and donates a percentage of its profits to struggling BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ college students. She also mentors students from K-12 and older, serves on the Board of the Federations of Women’s Organizations, and as a House Fellow at Cornell University, and she recently received the Kirby Edmonds award for social justice. She holds a BA from Ithaca College in Business Administration and Management.
Associate Board members are dedicated early- to mid-career Scholar alumnae who advance the mission of the Foundation while enhancing their leadership skills. The Associate Board represents the most advanced of Joyce Ivy’s service leadership and professional development opportunities for alumnae, which also include the Fellows Program and the new Joyce Ivy Interns Program. Annually voted upon by the Board of Directors, the Associate Board of Directors is involved in all aspects of the Foundation’s operations.
