Joyce Ivy Foundation Hosts Seventh Annual College Admissions Symposium, Announces Counselor of the Year Award
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, January 24, 2018 — The Joyce Ivy Foundation will hold the seventh annual Joyce Ivy College Admissions Symposium (JCAS) on May 11-12 at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Participation will be free of charge for school counselors, community-based organization leaders, and female high school sophomores and juniors due to the support of the Joyce Ivy Foundation and its donors. Advance registration is required.
The two-day program will feature interactive college admissions and financial aid workshops designed for education professionals, students, and families. Sessions on Friday, May 11, will be offered for high school counselors and community-based organization leaders to learn about highly selective admissions, need-based financial aid, and to share best practices in a collaborative setting. Sessions on Saturday, May 12, are designed to help talented female high school sophomores, juniors, and their families learn more about admission to highly selective colleges and the process of applying for financial aid.
“The goal of JCAS 2018 is to build upon the program’s strong foundation while expanding the offerings for both returning and brand new attendees,” said Allison Jegla, Director of the 2018 Symposium and Vice President for Program Development at the Joyce Ivy Foundation. “The planning committee is focused on increasing mutual information exchange between attendees and admissions staff, as well as developing new and innovative session topics. Following last year’s successful pilot of a sophomore program, this year’s student program will be open to both sophomores and juniors.”
Symposium workshops will be led by admissions and financial aid officers from a sampling of the country’s most selective colleges and universities, as well as experienced college counselors. Returning faculty members include representatives from Princeton University, Amherst College, Wellesley College, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
“I am also thrilled to announce the inaugural Joyce Ivy Counselor of the Year award, which will celebrate a Midwest counselor who consistently goes above and beyond for his or her students,” said Jegla. “Nominations will be accepted beginning on February 14, 2018, and the winner will be celebrated during the Joyce Ivy events held in May.”
“The Joyce Ivy College Admissions Symposium is college access at work – a way for students and families, who potentially would not otherwise have the opportunity, to connect firsthand with admissions officers from some of our nation’s top institutions,” said Brittany Carlson, Executive Director of the Joyce Ivy Foundation. “Each year, this event empowers young women from the Midwest to boldly pursue their college aspirations. “My experience as a JCAS participant and Summer Scholar helped me see my full potential — to believe that I could get accepted to and succeed at highly selective universities,” said Ashley Lane, a 2015 JCAS participant and current Fellow with the Foundation. “JCAS provided me with valuable resources and information on the college admissions process that wasn’t available at my high school. Without JCAS, I wouldn’t have dreamed of applying to the schools that I did, and I certainly wouldn’t be attending Georgetown today.”
Counselors and community-based organization leaders interested in attending JCAS on Friday, May 11, and female high school sophomores and juniors interested in attending the program on Saturday, May 12, may register on the Joyce Ivy Foundation website beginning on Wednesday, February 14, at www.joyceivyfoundation.org. Capacity is limited, and early registration is encouraged. With space limitations in mind, students are asked to select a single guardian to join them.
